Amityville’s varsity boys basketball team honored for historic season

On March 26, Amityville Memorial High School’s varsity boys basketball team was honored for their historic season during the board of education’s meeting at Park Avenue Memorial Elementary School.

Led by head coach Jack Agostino, Amityville’s basketball team won the Suffolk Class AA championship game after a thrilling 60-57 win over Smithtown West at Farmingdale State College on March 7. This marks the 20th Suffolk County championship in program history, and the 12th title under Agostino.

“It’s an honor to celebrate our boys varsity basketball team,” said Evan Farkas, the district’s director of athletics, physical education, and health. “They had an incredible run and we’re really proud of the entire team for what they’ve accomplished.”

Parents, district administrators and members of the board of education applauded the team for a memorable season. Each member of the team and the entire coaching staff received a certificate of recognition from the board.

“This team’s performance both on and off the court reflects a spirit of teamwork, dedication and sportsmanship that we are all proud to celebrate as the Suffolk County champions,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Gina Talbert.

Coach Agostino’s coaching staff includes his brother, Anthony Agostino, and alumni A.J. Price and Billy Kretz. The 2024-2025 boys basketball team includes:

Amityville Memorial High School’s top 10 scholars for the Class of 2025 were honored for their excellence in academics during the board of education’s March 26 meeting at Park Avenue Memorial Elementary School.

Amityville Memorial High School Principal Dr. John Cardone, joined by Assistant Principals Paul DeCarlo, Angelica Rodriguez, and Dr. Maria Vineyard, recognized each scholar and listed many of their accolades in a slideshow. The high school’s top 10 scholars include:

Amityville Memorial High School senior named as Long Island’s ‘Best Young Artists’

The Amityville School District is proud to announce that Amityville Memorial High School senior Lizette Acosta’s artwork will represent Amityville in the regional Long Island's Best Young Artists exhibition at The Heckscher Museum.

Now in its 29th year, the Long Island’s Best program challenges students in grades 9-12 to choose a work of art that is on display in the museum as inspiration for their own creative expression. Approximately 78 pieces of student-created artwork out of 455 entries from Long Island high school students were selected for inclusion in this year’s show.

This year, the Long Island’s Best exhibit will be available to view in-person at the Heckscher Museum from Sunday, April 6 through Sunday, May 25. The exhibit will also be available for online viewing beginning on April 5 by visiting the Heckscher Museum of Art website at https://www.heckscher.org.

Amityville holds districtwide Black History Month celebration

Students throughout the Amityville School District marked Black History Month with a series of performances at Amityville Memorial High School.  thumbnail264701

On Feb. 27, students throughout the Amityville School District marked Black History Month with a series of performances at Amityville Memorial High School. 

District administrators, staff members throughout the district, and parents gathered at the high school’s auditorium as students in grades K-12 celebrated Black culture through dance, music and poetry. Many of the performers wore matching clothes to promote unity, and each performance received a resounding applause from those in attendance. 

The district would like to commend all of the performers and directors for putting together a memorable celebration of Black history.

Amityville’s varsity cheerleaders honored for making history

Amityville Memorial High School’s varsity cheerleaders were honored for their historic performance at UCA Nationals in Orlando, Florida during the board of education’s Feb. 26 board meeting. 

Amityville competed at the UCA Nationals from Feb. 7-10, and they finished ninth in the nation during the finals for the Varsity Coed Division II Non Tumbling Game Day. Under the direction of head coach Ms. Meredith Cohen, Amityville’s 2024-25 varsity cheerleaders exceeded their goals this season. Prior to the qualifying for nationals, they qualified for the Suffolk County Championships this past fall. 

“To our 14 talented student athletes and our phenomenal coaching staff, your dedication, your passion and your relentless pursuit of excellence has made all of us Amityville proud,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Gina Talbert. 

The coaches and cheerleaders each received a certificate of recognition for their remarkable season.
