There was a sea of red caps and gowns as Amityville Memorial High School’s Class of 2024 held their commencement ceremony at Lou Howard Field on June 27.

During the ceremony, hundreds of graduates received diplomas and commendations for their hard work and dedication to their education and achievements. Valedictorian Margaret Catron and Salutatorian Amin Shah addressed their fellow graduates and talked about the importance of setting and achieving goals.

“It’s extremely important to set goals for yourself no matter how big or small those goals may seem,” Catron said. “The value of a goal comes not from the achievement of the goal, but from the work that is put in to achieving it. It is my hope everyone here will learn to appreciate the journey just a little bit more.”

“I don’t expect for you to go work for NASA and find the next habitable planet for us, but I do expect this class to be able to bring the change that past generations have failed to achieve,” Shah said. “This generation is made up of some of the most intelligent, hardworking, talented and caring people that will grace humanity.”

Also addressing the graduates were Amityville Memorial High School Principal Ms. Mary Stephens, Superintendent of Schools Dr. Gina Talbert, Class President Derrick Prince and Board of Education First Vice President Jeannette Santos.

“In the past year, I’ve had the privilege of witnessing the extraordinary leadership within this senior class,” Dr. Talbert said. “Your passion for excellence, your empathy towards one another, and your unyielding spirit have left an indelible mark on our school. You’ve shown that leadership isn’t about titles or positions, but it’s about action, integrity and the desire to make a difference.”

The district congratulates all members of the Class of 2024 and wishes them luck and happiness as they embrace the next step in life!
